4 Cases of Chronic Cor Pulmonale

Abstract
|
|
|
Diffuse pulmonary diseases may impose considerable burden upon the heart.
The designation "Cor pulmonale" i is applied to a heart which manifest dilatation and hypertrophy of right heart secondary to intrinsic diseases of the lung or pulmonary circul ation.
Four cases of cor pulmonale is reported.
Three of these cases secondary to pulmonary emphysema and one was caused by pulmonary fib.-osis.
In all patients; X-ray films of the chest demonstrated considerable enlargement of the right ventricle and the main pulmonary trunk.
The electrocardiogram showed marked right axis deviation, right ventricular hypertrophy and peaked P waves in L2, L,3 and on auscultation the second pulmonic sound was accenturated.
With aminophylline digitoxin therapy, low-salt diet, diuretics and bed rest three cases showed marked improvements.
Despite a usually effective regimens and the use of bronchodilatator drugs, the last case (Case 4) failed to improve.
